16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”
17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. – Genesis 28:16-18
I have a wall in my room covered in sticky notes. I know, that’s not really the best choice in decor. But this wall is really special to me. Whenever God is teaching me something, I write down what He is wanting me to remember, song lyrics that are speaking to me, and Bible verses that I needed to hear on a sticky note. All of these treasures are pasted on my wall where I can see whenever I need a reminder of what God did in my life.
Back in Genesis, Jacob didn’t have a sticky note. He had stones. In the Bible, when God really showed up in a situation, sometimes the people He showed up for would build a stack of rocks, called a pillar or an altar. These piles of stones would stand so that anyone who passed by could see that God had done something awesome in that place.
This is what Jacob did. He had an encounter with God and recorded it. A pillar to remind him of what God did.
Writing down what God is doing in our lives is so important because in the future, we will face doubts. When those doubts arise, we need a reminder of what God has done in the past.
A pillar. An altar. A sticky note.
Tell the story of God’s faithfulness. Post it on your wall. Write it in a journal. Those testimonies could be exactly what you need in the future to keep going. To keep trusting.
Even now, in this season, look back on your life and remember His goodness and faithfulness.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life. Help me never to forget what You have done for me. I want to trust You in everything, remind me of Your faithfulness. Amen.
